Dear Parents,
You are cordially invited to be a partner in your child's education!
This page highlights notes about our general routines in/out of class.
Thanks for supporting your second grader with the following:
*Home Folder Checks
The Home Folder will go home and return to school every day. Office papers, progress reports/notes, graded papers, and homework will be sent home in this folder. Please set aside a special time each night to help your 2nd grader remove and discuss the papers in this folder. (Children benefit so much from telling their parents what was taught that day, what they liked best, and what was easiest or most difficult about their work). Finished homework and teacher notes should come to school in the Home Folder as well. At home, your family may want to establish a special container or place for items that need returned to school. Having your child place the items in his/her folder and school bag the night before helps to eliminate morning chaos and support your child’s development of independence, responsibility, and organizational skills.
*Labels
Please label book bags, lunch boxes, and clothing with your child’s name. Individual supplies will need your child's name as well. It would be extra helpful to label each marker, pencil, large eraser, sharpener, supply box, folder, and notebook. Please label all envelopes and notes with your child’s name and a description of the contents of the envelope.
*Homework
You should expect your 2nd grader to have some type of routine homework mostly everyday, such as studying Spelling words, reading/responding for our Reading Scoops Log, or working in Bridges Home Connections workbook. Special graded home projects and unfinished classwork will come home occasionally in your child’s Home Folder with due dates marked. It is your child’s responsibility to have his/her homework completed on the day it’s due. All assigned weekly pages in Bridges Home Connections are encouraged for practice and extensions to further individual student progress. I will check that your child is completing all assigned Bridges homework pages weekly, however, only specific pages that I choose for formative assessment will include my feedback. I encourage you to set up with your child a daily scheduled time for homework. Remind will help you track upcoming important test/assignment dates. If we go to Remote Learning, you will also find those important dates in our Google Classroom Stream. Students should be able to do their assignments independently. If you notice your child is not able to do an assignment on his or her own, help is appropriate, but only if completely necessary. Please send an attached note or jot a note to me on the assignment indicating what part(s) were a struggle or how you helped. I will contact you if your child is falling behind or turning in poor work. If an emergency prevents your child from completing a homework assignment, please send a note and I will excuse or give your child extended time.
*Vacations/Absences
If you choose to go on vacation during the school year, I will have your child’s class work for him/her upon your return.Due to my lessons being linked to the children’s progress and pace in class, homework packets will not be sent home prior to your leaving. Make-up work for any type of absence will be limited to key concepts covered during that time, and your child will have time equal to the number of days they were absent to complete it. Please remember that you can always continue to keep your child on track with weekly routine/study assignments such as Bridges Home Connections, Spelling, and Reading Scoops Log while absent.
*Birthday Treats and Bottled Water
Due to Covid 19, birthday treats are not permitted this year. Students need to bring a bottle of water to have during the day everyday. They may refill their water bottle at school. Please do not send water bottles that have twist-off caps! Please provide a cover sleeve for your water bottle, if possible, to eliminate condensation/water on classwork and desk materials.
