Reading and Writing Workshop in Room 17
Dear Parents and Students,
Throughout the year, we will be using a literature-based reading/writing program. The program includes Read Alouds, Shared Reading, and Guided Reading, and it will focus on promoting a life-long enjoyment of daily reading and writing for a variety of purposes. Students will experience student-centered, interactive approaches to literacy and a thinking curriculum which emphasizes higher level comprehension skills. I will assess reading and writing using an assortment of methods: summative assessments on skills, written/oral responses to class text selections, individual conferences, reading records, and class projects/presentations. Students will also use the writing process to compose meaningful sentences and publish different types of writing pieces. As a part of classwork, students will be asked to read books of their choice throughout the school year (We will call these their "IDR Books"). After learning how to choose books, students' will be encouraged to make IDR book selections that are "just right" for their individual reading level to further progress. It is important that students keep their IDR books in class every day. Students will also be required to read for at least 15 minutes at home, 5 days per week. Independent reading at home will be monitored between parent, student, and teacher on the Scoops Reading Log. Students will receive credit for completing their reading log goal. Home book selections are between parent and student. They should be made from a variety of genres and should be "just right" choices. Digital/EBooks are also an option. We will chart student book titles in class to assure that all students are reading from different genres of literature, including nonfiction material. We will learn and practice reading strategies/skills in our mini lessons and in our small guided reading groups weekly. Students will be instructed to apply those skills/strategies with their IDR books and with teacher-selected classwork activities. Mini vocabulary/comprehension assessments on unfamiliar text will be given to assess how well the children are applying what they've practiced in class. Students will be required to complete a mini book report called a "Book Talk" during the second semester of second grade. On "Book Talk" Fridays, students will be sharing any IDR book they have read with the class. Opportunities for students to share reading response ideas will be given through class partner activities and literature circles. Poetry Binders will be brought home once a month for your second grader to share phonics and word study patterns with a "Lucky Listener" at home.
I am looking forward to sharing creative ideas together on our exciting journey through reading/writing workshop this year!
